Eviny
The Customer:
Eviny is one of Norway’s largest energy supply producers, manufacturing and distributing electricity to over 180,000 customers. Eviny has a strong environmental commitment and states that “society needs more green energy and good innovative solutions that make life easier and better for people.” In addition to providing climate-friendly energy, the company also contributes to the community by offering free educational programs and sponsoring many local sports clubs.
Eviny is a forward-looking energy company aiming to lead the development of climate-friendly energy and innovative infrastructure solutions. The group is headquartered in Bergen. Eviny already operates over 30 hydropower plants and more than 3,000 kilometers of fiber network. Additionally, the company builds and operates district heating plants in Bergen. For some of the homes Eviny supplies with electricity, individual measurement of hot water for heating and consumption is also offered.
The Challenge:
Eviny Energitjenester has used the M-Bus protocol for many years but was not satisfied with the existing solution provided. It was a difficult system to work with, and every time changes needed to be made or meter types added, they had to turn to the supplier, which was both time-consuming and very expensive. The company realized there was a need for a new communication solution and thus began searching for a better option. After discussions with several meter suppliers, they heard about us at PiiGAB. At that point, Øystein Kjosavik, an energy advisor at Eviny Energitjenester, contacted us, and after that, everything moved very quickly.
The Solution:
Initially, Eviny Energitjenester needed a communication solution for a project involving individual measurement of student housing. Values from consumption meters such as heat, water, gas, and electricity meters are collected from each individual apartment. The tenant is then billed for their individual consumption. Eviny Energitjenester needed this to work smoothly, efficiently, and securely, and we soon arrived at a simple yet highly effective solution to meet their needs: our M-Bus converter PiiGAB 900 with the add-on application QuickPost. PiiGAB 900 collects all meter readings, and QuickPost enables the converter to send the readings directly to an FTP server. Eviny Energitjenester also requested a configuration application, as there are many meters to read, and configuring each one individually would be far too time-consuming. We then developed an application that searches for all meters on the M-Bus line and automatically places them in the correct template. This saves the company a lot of time and also allows them to operate more independently.
Thanks to traceability throughout when using the M-Bus protocol, the reading becomes more accurate and configuration easier, since you can link the meter number to the reading.
After the initial project, Eviny Energitjenester has gradually started replacing the current solutions at other facilities. Today, Eviny Energitjenester has 65 facilities where PiiGAB 900 functions as the reading unit. Currently, more than 5,000 M-Bus meters are read, all through PiiGAB 900. Additionally, at the time of writing, four new facilities with over 1,300 meters distributed across four converters are being completed, one of which is Norway’s largest shopping center. Eviny works under the motto; “We give tomorrow new opportunities,” and at PiiGAB, we are very proud and happy to have the opportunity to contribute to that.
